The Elephant Rope

As a man was passing the elephants, he suddenly stopped, confused by the fact that these huge creatures were being held by only a small rope tied to their front leg. No chains, no cages. It was obvious that the elephants could, at anytime, break away from their bonds but for some reason, they did not.

He saw a trainer nearby and asked why these animals just stood there and made

no attempt to get away. “Well,” trainer said, “when they are very young and much smaller we use the same size rope to tie them and, at that age, it’s enough to hold them. As they grow up, they are conditioned to believe they cannot break away. They believe the rope can still hold them, so they never try to break free.”The man was amazed. These animals could at any time break free from their bonds but because they believed they couldn’t, they were stuck right where they were.
Like the elephants, how many of us go through life hanging onto a belief that we cannot do something, simply because we failed at it once before?
Failure is part of learning; we should never give up the struggle in life.

Never Give Up Story #14

Her name is Molly she’s a gray speckled…15 year old Shetland pony who was abandoned by her owners…when Hurricane Katrina hit southern Louisiana…she spent weeks on her own before finally being rescued and taken to a rescue shelter…where abandoned animals were stockpiled

While there Molly was attacked by a pit bull terrier… and almost died…Her gnawed right front leg became

so infected… her veterinarian went to LSU for help…but LSU was overwhelmed with other rescues…and Molly became a welfare case…Enter LSU equine surgeon Doctor Rustin Moore…after seeing Molly…he changed his mind and agreed to operate…Doctor Moore observed that Molly was careful to lie down on her different sides…so she wouldn’t develop sores on her body…she allowed people to handle her…without fight or flight…she protected her injured leg…by constantly shifting her weight and not overloading her good legs…she was a very smart pony with a serious survival ethic…Doctor Moore agreed to remove her leg below the knee…and a temporary artificial limb was built…But Molly’s real story began when she walked out of LSU School of Veterinarian Medicine…Her story is a parable of Post-Katrina Louisiana life…a human prosthesis designer built her a new leg…she gained weight and her coat began to shine…as she once again felt the love of being groom…Molly’s regular Veterinarian…Allison Barca said the new human prosthetic leg…gave the little pony a whole new life…she will actually ask for the leg to be put on…by extending her half limb outward …and hobble over to you…letting you know that she is ready for her leg to be attach …Enter Kay Harris…Molly’s new guardian who has given her a new job…Kay and Molly visit nursing homes…rehabilitation centers…children hospitals…wounded military personnel and anywhere people need an inspirational demonstration of hope…Molly the pony with the prosthetic leg… makes a positive influence on everyone she meets…

Molly has a big role in life to play…she may be a symbol of New Orleans itself…she survived the hurricane…she survived a horrible injury and thru it all…she never gave up…
