Today there are many questions about where religion ends and spirituality begins, or does spirituality end and religion begin, or are religion and spirituality the same thing in the same place…..and that is just the beginning of the confusion for many today!

This is a story of unravelling the mystery of where one begins and the other ends for me!

I was doing a training program with individuals who were embarking on a career of working with people in the helping industry and a woman walked into the program praising the Lord every time she said anything. I noticed the other participants of the group beginning to get very upset and distance themselves from her physically, and mentally they tuned her out each time she had anything to say. She had some very valid information to share, however, her sharing lost all impact because of her involvement and inclusion with religion in all that she did. No one would give her any feedback about what she was doing, because each time anyone did attempt to give her any information she made sure to let us know that her husband was a Pastor, and she would then quote him and the bible stopping all information in it’s track. It became very evident to all of us in the program that religion had become a shield, a defence mechanism to keep people away from her! I spent much time contemplating how to approach this issue and then miraculously I walked into the group one day, opened my mouth and began to talk about how easy it is to confuse spirituality with religion. The 15 people in the group began to relate their stories and the confusion that existed for them around this issue. About 75% of the group stated and agreed that:

  • every human being has a right to have their own personal beliefs about everything and that includes religion
  • No other person has the right to demand what they individually believe in
  • Most of them did not go to church,
  • They all had strong belief systems,
  • They believed themselves to be spiritual beings
  • They did not believe that going to church made them spiritual
  • Going to church made them religious
  • religious doctrine did not fit with them and their personal belief systems
  • They all believed in a god, creator, and the acceptance of all doctrines
  • They did not appreciate anyone telling them that if they were not Christian in someone else’s eyes that they could not and would not be successful in creating their own lives!

It was amazing to watch the Pastors wife really listen to what they had to say. She agreed with every point and stated that she did not realize that religion and spirituality were not the same thing.
From that point forward in the training program, she became accepting of all human beings, no matter what race, creed, color or religion they were. In the eyes of humanity and in life she accepted the fact that we are all one, with our own unique religions and spiritual beliefs and who was she to think that her religion was the only one for everyone!
Today, she is working with people and making a real difference in their lives because of her understanding of the uniqueness of individuals, mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually and she now believes that:

  • RELIGION AND SPIRITUALITY ARE NOT THE SAME THING!

The group determined that everyone in the group was a spiritual being, however, each one of them had their own religious doctrines including being an atheist which was also seen as being a spiritual belief system!
